Henri
Coanda ( 1886-1972) was a Romanian engineer, member of Romanian Academy, aerodynamics
pioneer, physicist and inventor. He invented the jet engine and discovered the
effect that bears his name. He was the son of General Constantin Coanda, Prime
Minister of Romania in 1918. In 1910 he built the first aircraft with reactive
propulsion, actually a reactive jet, without propeller, which was presented at
the International Exhibition in Paris the same year. In 1934 he was granted the
French patent for "Method and device for deflecting a stream of fluid that
penetrates into another fluid", a phenomenon called "Coanda
effect". He was appointed director of the Institute of Scientific and
Technical Creation (INCREST) in 1969, and in 1970 he became a member of the
Romanian Academy.
