King
Carol I (1839-1914) was a Romanian
ruler of Prussian descent, born into Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family. In 1866
he became Ruling Prince of Romania, and in 1881 he was crowned King of Romania.
He ruled 48 years, the longest reign in the history of the country. He achieved
the independence of Romania in 1878, built the Peles Castle and contributed to
the modernization of Romania. In 1867 he was elected honorary member of the
Romanian Academy, and between 1879 and 1914 he hold the position of honorary chairman
the same institution.
