Ion
Creanga (1837-1889) was a Romanian writer, considered to be "the greatest Romanian storyteller
of all times" and one of the classics of Romanian literature. He was born
in Humulesti, a village not far from Neamt Citadel. His most representative literary
work is the novel "Childhood Memories ". Creanga was the son of a
farmer who encouraged him to go to school. He graduatef from Iasi Theological
Seminary in 1859, and became a deacon and then a priest in a Greek Orthodox
Church. In 1864 he is appointed teacher at No. 1 Primary School in Iasi and as
such he elaborated four textbooks for primary school. His work includes
literary tales for children ("Capra cu trei iezi", "Fata babei
si fata mosului", "Povestea porcului", "Punguta cu doi bani"
etc), stories (Cinci paini, Pacala, Prostia omeneasca etc. ), short stories (Popa
Duhul, Mos Nichifor Cotcariul ) and an autobiographical novels ("Amintiri
din copilarie").
