Born in San Nicolas neighborhood in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, son of José Carlos Encinas Doussinague of Cuban Spanish and Pilar Bardem, Bardem comes from a series of actors: his grandparents Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro, his mother Pilar and her brother Carlos are an example. But his uncle Juan Antonio Bardem and his cousin Michael were featured as film directors. Javier debuted on the big screen in 1990 with the film "The Ages Of Lulu", a film directed by Bigas Luna, one of the directors most common in the first stage as a performer.
Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem is the first Spanish actor who was nominated for an Academy Award and the first to win eight years later for his role in (2008). In No Country for Old Menemás has won six Goyas, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, the Cannes Festival Award for Best Actor and Screen Actors Guild Award. He is married to actress Penelope Cruz.
