Our city
Kilkis (Κιλκίς) is situated in the North of Greece near the borders and has been inhabited
since the Prehistoric Ages, as documented by archaeological findings in several
areas as well as the writings of poets and historians of Antiquity (Homer,
Herodotos, Thucydides ).
After the liberation of Kilkis in 1913 refugees from Stromnitsa , Thrace , Pontus and Eastern Romylia came to stay here, bringing with
them their history and their customs. Nowadays all that blend of people found
the way to live together.
In
Kilkis you can see the Byzantine church of Ai Giorgis which was built around
1830, the Archeaological museum, where you can see among other things the 6th century Kouros of Evropos statue, a
series of ceramics dating back to the early Iron Age, sculptures from Hellenistic
and Roman Times and many more.
On
the hill you can visit the Cave which is full of stalactites and stalagmites.
The fossils of hyenas, horses and deer found in the cave show that life existed
in the area 30000 years ago.
Two
victorious battles, one against the Bulgarians in 1913 and the second against
the Germans in the 1st World
War took place in Kilkis, the outcome of which is very important and if it was
different things would also be diferrent not only for Greece but for all the European countries.
Around Kilkis there is more to see, like the Lake of Doirani , Pikrolimni (a lake with therapeutical clay), mountains, great scenery,
the lake of Skra , the Botanical Gardens in Pontokerasia and many more.
Our
school
The 2nd
Lyceum of Kilkis is an old school but we try to renovate it and make it
convenient for the teachers, about 35, and the students, about 300 each year.
There are 13 classrooms, a physics and biology laboratories, a PE gym and a big
courtyard. The students get general education in the 1st year but in the 2nd
and 3rd years they have to choose special lessons depending on what they want
to study after they enter university many of whom manage to do very well and
have the opportunity to do so.
Our first visit to Spain (22-10-2012 to 26-10-2012 )
When we decided to
join Comenius we were a bit anxious about the outcome of our decision. Worried
about being accepted by our agencies, worried about organising the first visit,
worried about meeting teachers and students from other countries, with so many
differences. The language, the lifestyle, the school and many more. When all
the teachers participating in the project finally met in Alcala la Real, a
small city in Andalusia , and visited Alfonso school we found out that everything was the same. The
students with the same look in their eyes, asking the same questions when they
were curious to learn about things, the teachers with a behaviour similar to
ours, with the same problems in the class but with the same patience and
understanding. I could write more things but I don't want to be boring. What
I want to say is that for us, Georgia, Sofia and Rena, joining Comenius
was a great experience. No matter where we come from, we feel and react
the same way. As for the way we were welcomed by our hosts can't have been
better. Everyone, from the Principal to the teachers, were very excited to meet
us and made us feel at home.
