Easter in Romania

As we all know, Easter is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary as described in the New Testament. Easter is preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The celebration of Easter therefore varies between 4 April and 8 May. This year it is going to be celebrated on 5th May.

Easter customs vary across the Christian world, but attending sunrise services, exclaiming the Paschal greeting, clipping the church and decorating Easter eggs, a symbol of the empty tomb, are common motifs. Additional customs include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and Easter parades, which are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians.

In Romania we have some special customs which make us famous. First off all, referring to the dinner served on Easter, we have some delicious dishes which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Here are just some examples:

Drob - is made out of lamb (heart, liver and kidneys), eggs, onions, parsley and spices.

Meat-rolls-in-cabbage-leaves - the recipe is quite complex and rich: pork, rice, onions, cabbage, spices.

Cozonac - a desert well appreciated by Romanians: flour, eggs, cocoa, Turkish delight, walnuts, raisins, sugar, rum, lemon.

And of course the famous red eggs which nowadays come in different colors as well. More interesting however, is the artistry of some Romanian people who can decorate eggs so that they could bear different Christian and folk symbols.

There are many legends related to this custom. The most interesting of all seems to be the one stating that Jesus Christs mother brought some eggs in a basket at his crucifixion and put them beneath the cross. His holly blood dripped over the eggs and they became red.

So we invite you this year to celebrate these holly days with us and to taste our delicious and unique food.
