CRETE
Crete is the largest and the most popular Greek island. It forms a significant part of the economic and cultural heritage of Greece. Crete was once the centre of the Minoan civilization which is regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe. Crete is mountainous with great valleys, fertile plateaus, caves and gorges. The most famous gorge, Samaria, is a national park and a World's Biosphere Reserve, where Kri-Kri ( cretan goat ) and many endemic species live. Cretan produce the best olive oil in the world and along with their diet they live long.
There are many archaeological sites which include Knossos, Phaestos and Gortyn. Knossos is considered to be the oldest city in Europe ( 1700-1400 BC ). The Palace in Knossos had 1,300 rooms which were connected with corridors, and among other things there were many storerooms, stores, a theatre, a drainage system e.t.c.
Pheastos was inhabited from 4000 BC and according to Homer it was well populated. The Pheastos Disc, a clay disc fond there, has a unique sophisticated hieroglyphic script.
Gortyn, is another city which was inhabited from the Neolithic Era and flourished . There are many archaeological ruins there but the most important finding is the Gortyn Code, which is the oldest and most complete example of a code of Ancient Greek Law.
