Georgios Seferis was born in 1900 in Smyrni. He was a poet and a diplomat. He is one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century. He was a supporter of the demotic ( every day ) Greek language, a Nobelist and an Ambassador to the UK from 1957 to 1962. He studied in Athens but completed his studies in Paris ( 1918 - 1925 ). When Smyrni was occupied by the Turkish army in 1922, he was in Paris but he felt as if being in exile because he could not return to his homeland and this feeling influenced his poetry. He returned to Athens in 1925 and started his diplomatic career. During the II World War he followed the Free Greek Government in exile to Crete, Egypt, South Africa and Italy. He received many Honors and Prizes, among them  Honorary Doctoral Degrees. In 1963 he was awarded by the Nobel prize for Literature. He was the first Greek to win a Nobel.( He was followed by Odysseas Elytis in 1972 ). In 1969 he made a statement on the BBC World Service against the Dictators ( the regime of Colonels ) where he stated " this anomaly must end ". By saying this he became a popular hero. Strophe, The Cistern, Mythical Narrative, Ships Log Book, Three Secret Poems are some of his best poems. Some of them have been turned into songs by Theodorakis and other Greek composers and gave great emotions and hope to the Greek people.
