DOMINIKOS THEOTOKOPOULOS

Dominikos
Theotokopoulos, the painter, was born in Herakleion, Crete, in 1541. He trained
in Herakleion and became a master before travelling to Venice at the age of 26.
In 1570 he moved to Rome. During his stay in Italy he enriched his style with
elements of Mannerism and the Venetian Rainaissance. In 1577 he moved
to Toledo, Spain where he lived and worked until he died. El Greco is regarded
as a precursor of Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works
were a source of inspiration for poets and writers, such as Nikos Kazantzakis.
He was also highly esteemed as an architect and sculptor because he
incorporated architecture in his paintings. Some of his works are: The
Disrobing of Christ, The adoration of the Magi, The Holy trinity, but
his best known work is The burial of the Count
of Orgaz.
