Aikaterini Konstantopoulou , better known as Katina Paxinou  was a celebrated Greek actress, who achieved international popularity for appearing in several Hollywood films. She won an Academy Award and Golden Globe in 1944, and received a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. She is considered to be the greatest Greek actress of the 20th century and she paved the way to the generation of Melina Mercury and Irene Papas.
She was mainly a theatrical actress and played Electra of Sofocles, Spectra of Ibsen and other parts. She played in the film For whom the Bell Tolls with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman and won The Golden Globe and Academy Award for best Supporting Actress in 1944. She also appeared in other Hollywood films as Electra Mourning and Inheritance, in Broadway Theatre and in some European films. In 1987 the Greek Mail issued a commemorative stamp Of her.
