KAPETAN MIHALIS

1.       KAPETAN MIHALIS BY NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS
It was midnight, the wind moved the leaves of the lemon tree and the three foreheads who were around the dead person were cooled. The women stopped crying and the dogs who felt the death in the air stopped barking.
Fanouris was starving and because no one talked about eating he said:
“Hey fellows, how about you? I saw some sausages hanging in the cellar, and raki. What about drinking some”?
“Why not”, said Patasmos and rubbed his stomach which had started making noises.” Only the dead don’t drink”.
" And you Stratis?"
" Isn't it a shame?" said Stratis.
"We won't be long" said Patasmos," just to strenghthen ourselves to be able to stay up till dawn.
In no time Fanouris went to the cellar. Took some sausages and Patasmos lit a fire to grill them.
