Ioan C. Cantacuzino ( also Ion Cantacuzino;
November 25, 1863 – January 14, 1934) was a renowned Romanian physician and bacteriologist,
a professor at the Romanian School of
Medicine and Pharmacy and a
member of the Romanian
Academy. He was the founder of the fields of microbiology and experimental immunology and
pathology in Romania and creator of the Ioan Cantacuzino
Institute
His discoveries were relevant in
the treatment of cholera, epidemic
typhus, tuberculosis,
and scarlet
fever. As a disciple of Mechnikov, he devoted part of his research to
expanding on the latter's field of interest (phagocytes,
the body's means
of defence against pathogens, as
well as the issue of immunity and invertebrates).
He invented the notion of contact
immunity and
discovered the agglutination of microbes (the Cantacuzino phenomenon).
Ioan Cantacuzino, has developed a rich vibronic
research on cholera and cholera vaccination. Based on investigations in this
direction, the doctor has developed a cholera vaccination method, called
"Method Cantacuzino", still used today in countries where there are
cases of cholera. The campaign of 1913 led the first massive cholera
vaccination in infectious burning point, known in science as the "Great
Romanian experience", which saved thousands of lives, and has initiated
measures to combat the cholera epidemic.
During the First World War as The leader of the
civil and military health services has taken great steps to combat epidemics of
typhus. He created a series of works about discovering cellular and humoral
immunity, sensitivity and lack of body immunity against scarlet fever, the
study of world renowned cholera and vaccinotherapy. Introduces Calmette's
vaccine and in 1912 created the typhoid vaccine.
