EUGENE IONESCO


Eugen Ionescu  (1909-1994) is known outside Romania as Eugene Ionesco, French writer of Romanian descent, the foremost figure of the Theatre of the Absurd and member of the French Academy (Seat 6) since 1970. Eugene Ionescu was the subject of dozens of books and hundreds of studies, theses, international seminars, symposiums and festivals. His work includes drama "Cantareata cheala" (1950 ), "Regele moare" (1952 ), "Omul cu valiza" (1975), essays and literary prose: "La photo du Colonel"  ( 1962), "Note despre teatrul de avangarda" (1962), "Situatii si perspective" (1980) etc. The writer’s centenary was widely celebrated, 2009 being declared byUNESCO the year “Eugen Ionescu". The same year Romanian Academy named the writer a member post-mortem
