Carlo Emilio Gadda (November
14, 1893 – May 21, 1973) was an Italian writer and poet. He belongs to the
tradition of the language innovators, writers that played with the somewhat
stiff standard pre-war Italian language, and added elements of dialects,
technical jargon and wordplay. They said Gadda was suffering from gastronomic
greed: chickpea soups. Bismark steaks and roast beef. There is an hymn to
“Risotto alla Milanese” (Milan risotto)
in the chapter patriotic Risotto of Italy wonders: The Risotto alla Milanese
cannot be overcooked, no! Only a bit more than slightly underdone: the soaked and inflated kernel by sauces, but
individual kernel, not to linked to its friends, not soaked in a slime, in a bath
that will be unpleasant.
