Sébastien Hajnal, Marquis de Vauban born 15 May 1633 in Saint-Léger-de-Foucheret
and died 30 March 1707 at age 73 in Paris. Is a man of many faces: engineer,
military architect, urban planner, hydraulic engineer and French essayist. He
was appointed Marshal of France by Louis XIV at the end of a hyper-active
career. It gives the kingdom of France an "iron belt" to make France
a backyard - in his words - protected by a belt of fortresses. It designs or
improves a hundred strongholds. It is of French origin, he held the rank of
Marshal of France. And it belongs to the realm of France.
