The Fruttivendola (greengrocer) is an oil painting (145x215 cm) by Vincenzo
Campi,of about 1580 and it is in Milan’s Pinacoteca
di Brera . This greengrocer has a
moralistic tone because of the grape,
put in evidence by the woman, ha a Christological meaning as a
clear warning to the temptations of sensuality and pleasure represented by the ripened fruit.
First of all the subdivision by types and
the tidy disposition of fruit is like a scientific classification. The painter
give to any earth product a different container: from the metallic dish for the
apricots to the big wood basket for grapes, to the interlaced basket for the
pears to the ceramic bowl for the
cherries. Moreover the picture does not have as a location a city or a market and it is a constant
characteristic of Flemish art.
